We have been eating ridiculously well on this trip. Last year I was by myself when I came down, and focused entirely on shortest amount of time, largest amount of fat when choosing my dining options. This year we made the decision to eat local, since we can’t get really great seafood in Asheville. I mean, I guess we could, but since I grew up near the coast, it makes me nervous to eat seafood in the mountains. And get a load of that asshole who accused me of ruining my tastebuds on chain restaurants so that I couldn’t appreciate Mellow Mushroom (A chain restaurant).
Anyway, So far we’ve had linguine with scallops and spinach, grilled king mackerel steaks, and last night, beer boiled shrimp and fried oysters.
May I say, in passing, that my fried oysters were far and away and light years beyond the appetizer plate we got at 42nd St Oyster Bar for dad’s birthday, since mine were actually all the way cooked? Aren’t they supposed to be Zagat rated, or something? I mean, if you’re into raw bar, I’m sure their fried oysters would have been awesome, but we ordered them fried and therefore expected them to be cooked, which they were not. My fried oysters were double fried, a process which involves cooking in two batches to allow one batch to cool before being popped back into the pan again making the final result an awesome explosion of crispy tasty goodness. It’s also how you make pommes frites.
If you google “Mellow Mushroom Sucks” I’m the first result.
